 Auction for IPL players-2009

The First IPL Cricket Player auctions happened today, 6th of feb'09 for the IPL Cricket games starting in May'09. With the addition of English team for this year's games, a lot of heavyweight all rounders like Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen were in the foray this year.

The English Players got their due recognition in the 2009 IPL cricket auctions. Flintoff and Pietersen became the highest grossers, with each taking a whopping US $1.55 million (appr Rs 7.35 crore). This is even more than what Mahendra Singh Dhoni bagged last year. Dhoni took US $ 1.50 million, which is Rs. 1.35 crores less than the English players.

The hard-hitting Pietersen, who was England's captain till recently, was bought by Bangalore Royal Challengers  while Flintoff went to Chennai Super Kings.

Bangladesh bowler Mashrafe Mortaza became the costliest player from his country to be sold in the Indian Premier League players' auction in Goa on Friday. 25-year-old Mortaza, who has played 35 Tests and 103 ODIs, was purchased by Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders  for a massive US $ 600,000.

Interestingly, Mortaza had started with a base price of $50000 but his price tag kept climbing steadily as Kolkata faced a tough competition from Kings XI Punjab before they bagged him for 12 times his starting price.

Other players who made a massive impact in the auction were South Africa's Jean-Paul Duminy, who went for $950,000 against his base price of $300,000.

Little known South African Tyron Henderson, yet to play Tests and ODIs, was snapped up by defending champions Rajasthan Royals for a mammoth $650,000 after starting with a base price of $100,000.

England's Ravi Bopara also got a good deal when he was purchased by Kings' XI Punjab for $450,000 which was three times his starting price of $150,000.
